Have you ever wished that you had access to more information about Jesus Christ, the Bible and the Church? Have you wanted to know more so as to be able to explain your faith more completely?
We have launched an on line study designed to prepare Christians for leadership. Anyone willing to do the readings may join, regardless of denominational affiliation.
At present there are 15 people from three states and three different backgrounds enrolled.
My presentation will stress the great themes that all Christians hold in common, with more details on the English Church tradition. At the same time, every effort will be made to present dissenting views accurately and kindly.
While there is an attempt to keep the group somewhat together for the sake of discussions, a person may simply do the readings at his own speed and need not enter the on line discussions. The level of reading is that expected of high school graduates and/or college. In addition to the material provided on line, there will be recommended readings from a variety of authors both ancient and modern.
The initial course is hermeneutics: the science and art of Biblical interpretation. Learning how to read the Bible sensibly and to be able to explain it accurately is essential for a Christian Teacher, a Personal Evangelist, a Lay Minister, a Deacon, Deaconess, or Priest.
Any Christian can benefit by understanding the many types of literature in the Bible and how they reveal to us the God we serve and worship.
After the introductory course, other 12 week courses will follow: Old and New Testament Introduction with in depth studies of Genesis, Exodus, Isaiah and the Prophets, the Gospels, Romans, the Pastoral Epistles and Revelation.
Two Church history courses will survey the changes and growth in understanding of the faith from the Birth of Jesus to the Reformation and from the Reformation to modern times.
A course on liturgy, worship with emphasis on the Book of Common Prayer is designed to equip a person for leading at church assemblies as well as enriching one’s private devotional life.
A course on systematic theology will sum up the doctrines that are derived from Biblical studies and assist those who will become catechists in teaching the great doctrines of the Church.
Christian Signs and Sacraments have been often neglected and misunderstood. The relationship of these evidences of God’s work in the world to the common order and rhythm of our daily life will be examined both from their basis in Scripture and in the practice of the church.
All of these will be approached not simply to increase a fund of theoretical knowledge, but to reveal the impact the Gospel of Christ should have on daily life.
